Campaign Volunteer Training Materials

Glossary of Campaign Terms

Account an organization or individual involved in the campaign and assigned to an Account Manager.
Account Manager the volunteer responsible for contacting an account/company for the campaign and handling all aspects of the campaign, including delivery of campaign materials, making presentations, assisting the account with their campaign and collecting the final report envelope.
Account History a total history of an account’s giving, sometimes covering many years. The history should include the account’s CEO, ECC, address, phone number, past giving performance and special remarks related to the account.
Agency Tours pre-arranged visits to selected agencies for groups of prospective donors designed to offer an on-site education concerning how community services are delivered.
Allocations see Fund Distribution
Average Gift total gift of employees divided by the number of givers.
Awards earned by a company/account for its corporate gift and/or employee campaign and is based on per capita giving.
Cabinet Meeting a key campaign meeting held for the purpose of receiving reports and information from Cabinet members and discussing the strategic plan, implementation and problem solving aspects of the annual campaign.
Campaign Analysis an analysis of gifts by year, account, division, group or geographical area.
Campaign Cabinet the “executive committee” of the fund-raising campaign, chaired by the Campaign Chair, which includes selected key leaders of divisions, groups
and committees.
Campaign Chair the volunteer who has accepted the responsibility as the top campaign individual that leads the annual campaign.
Campaign Video a video produced that is used to educate and inform local audiences about the United Way of the Wabash Valley in an effort to encourage giving.
Campaign Tagline or Slogan a distinctive phrase of catchword for focusing public attention on the United Way of the Wabash Valley. Many communities tie their campaign slogan/tagline to the national theme for maximum exposure.
Campaign Timeline a chart outlining all necessary campaign activities and responsibilities required between the time the campaign chair is recruited and the post-campaign analysis. The timeline includes important target dates and should be adhered to closely.
Card Value the total current dollar value of all campaign-giving accounts. This is the amount that you hope to build upon as you enter your new campaign.
Chief Executive Officer generic term for the individual who has overall authority for carrying out the established policies of a company or organization.
Community Investor Community an individual who contributes $ 500 to $999 to the United Way of the Wabash Valley.
Corporate Gift an annual contribution made in the name of a company.
Corporate Match an annual contribution that is made by the company that is related in some way to the employee campaign amount.
Cultivation the year-round effort to develop the campaign potential of firms, employee groups, professionals, etc.
Days of Caring designated days in which the individuals volunteer to spend time at agencies and other non-profit organizations to create or foster the relationship between the two entities.
Designation an option provided contributors during the campaign, which allows them to select a specific agency or program to receive their contribution.
Direct Bill a pledge technique in which the donor requests a billing statement from the United Way of the Wabash Valley. Many United Ways establish a
minimum amount for billing and number of billing periods.
Direct Mail Campaign a direct appeal, made by mail, normally used in selected small businesses and residential campaigns.
Division a grouping of campaign accounts by United Way according to similarities in their makeup. Such groupings are often based on size, trade classification, profession, geographic location or a combination of these factors.
Employee Campaign Coordinator known as the ECC, this is the individual who coordinates the campaign for their company.
Employee Goal an established dollar amount that represents the desired total contribution in an employee campaign. Employee campaign goals should be developed in cooperation with the CEO, the Employee Campaign
Coordinator and the Campaign Committee.
Fund Distribution the volunteer citizen review system by which United Way distributes the funds they raise. A vital part of United Way’s campaign case.
General Campaign the general campaign that is conducted during the fall, typically after Labor Day in which the majority of the United Way funds are acquired.
Gift-In-Kind contributions by companies of their services or products at no charge to the United Way of the Wabash Valley to help reduce the administrative costs of the organization.
Kick Off the formal start of a campaign in the community, usually held in the fall, through an event that gets community-wide attention. It is advisable, whenever possible, to build momentum and generate significant dollars through the Pilot Campaign and early cultivation well in advance of the kick off.
Labor Liaison a United Way staff member who acts as the liaison between the labor work force, organized labor and the United Way office and agencies. This individual is very involved with community projects and workplace campaigns involving unions.
Metro Size a classification of United Way communities that ranks them according to the amount they have raised. The United Way of the Wabash Valley is a Metro 3, which is $ 2,000,000 to $ 3,999,999.
Mission a statement that expresses an organization’s purpose.
New Hires Program enrolling new employees at the time of hiring for a contribution to United Way through payroll deduction. This program not only is a source for new dollars but also helps recapture campaign losses caused by employee turnover.
One-Time Money a contribution made to the United Way for a single campaign as a result of special circumstances. In most cases, the gift is made in addition to normal annual contribution. Typically involves special fund-raising events.
Pilot Campaign a campaign that is conducted prior to the general fall campaign designed to provide an example to build enthusiasm in the community and demonstrate the effectiveness of campaign techniques and materials.
Per Capita Gift the campaign measurement arrived at by dividing the total gift by the total number of employees at the participating firm.
Planned Giving refers to gifts that are made by donors typically as part of their overall estate plan. The gift can take many forms, such as cash, stock, real estate and personal property. Planned gifts are typically deferred gifts meaning that the donor plans that the gist will be received by the charity at some time in the future.
Pledge a promise to make a contribution in installments over a specified period of time.
Report Envelope the envelope form that is provided by the United Way in which the account places it campaign results, pledge forms and payments.
Speakers Bureau a group of individuals who are well-informed and forceful speakers and whose job is to appear before employee groups and others to enlist support for the campaign. Members of the speakers bureau are typically cabinet members, agency directors or employees, account managers or United Way staff.
Special Events carefully designed public events that attract positive attention to your campaign, help keep the public informed and motivate your volunteers.
Vanguard Contributors with the United Way of the Wabash Valley we consider Vanguard Contributors as those individuals who contribute $ 1,000 or more to
the annual campaign.
Workplace Campaign a program for developing year-round relationships with employees at selected workplaces in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of, access to and involvement with, the United Way of
the Wabash Valley and its community network of human-care services. Typically involves payroll deduction contributions.
Zero Accounts accounts with no record of giving to previous United Way campaigns.

2008 Wabash Valley Nonprofit Training Series
The United Way of the Wabash Valley, the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and Duke Energy have partnered with the Indiana Nonprofit Resource Network to bring a series of nonprofit training workshops to Terre Haute. The last one is being presented on Thursday, August 28, 2008.

Meet the Press: Working with the Media of the Wabash Valley
Come and meet the media! This panel workshop will allow you to find out the best ways to contact the media, what format they prefer to receive press releases and how you can better publicize your nonprofit news and events.
