Household Survey results (continued)

The previous table shows the major issues for
neighborhoods were:

Economic issues in general were the most-often cited as the primary issues facing
the Wabash Valley.

In examining the current “unemployment statistics,” it appears that the greater concern is with underemployment rather than with unemployment.
  • Unemployment/underemployment (39.9%)
  • Poor road/traffic conditions (38.8%)
  • Shortage of recreational facilities (35.3%)

Major issues for households were:

  • Having lots of anxiety/depression (26.5%)
  • Difficulty in budgeting (19.8%)
  • Inability to afford health care (18.0%)

Newcomers

  • More than 26% of respondents lived at their current address for two years or less.
  • These “newcomers” had a different perspective of issues in their neighborhoods.
  • Newcomers were more likely to report:
    • Unsafe school environment
    • Noise or other pollution
    • Shortage of affordable housing
    • Overcrowded housing
    • Poor road/traffic conditions
    • Finding it difficult to budget
    • Not having enough money for food
    • Experiencing noise or other pollution
    • Not having enough money for doctor, leisure activities, or legal help
Newcomers, and those recently moved to a neighborhood, appear to be a group on which the community should focus, according to ISU Sociology Research Lab Director Tom Steiger, who conducted the survey.
