Phase I - Forming a Community Partnership

The sponsoring organizations for COMPASS II in the Wabash Valley are United Way of the Wabash Valley, Indiana State University and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. Representatives from these three organizations and others began COMPASS II during the summer of 2002. These representatives were: Beth Tevlin of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation; Ron Reeves, Wabash Valley Community Foundation board member; Lou Jensen of Indiana State University’s Center for Public Service and Community Engagement; Norm McQueen, retired from Columbia House and United Way board member; Fred Southworth, Hoosier Energy and United Way board member; Jeff Pittman, Ivy Tech State College; Dave Zaun, retired from Indiana State University and Eli Lilly; Mark Johnson and Bob Menge of the United Way of the Wabash Valley.

The community partnership guided the overall COMPASS II effort and was committed to COMPASS II. Its members are strategically selected stakeholders representing the diverse sectors of the community, including:

  • People on whom the community decisions will have an impact
  • People who have an interest in the effort
  • People who represent different sectors (particularly people from councils and federations representing different sectors when possible)
  • People who have not previously been “at the table” for these types of efforts; and
  • People who reflect the diversity of the community.
