From the Tribune Star - TERRE HAUTE — First-grade students took notice as soon as Troy Fears, executive director of the United Way of the Wabash Valley, entered a classroom Friday morning at Davis Park Elementary.

After all, he was carrying a stuffed bear.

And other members of the United Way held stuff animals, too.

"I want the bear," one student said.

PACKET PICK-UP

You are required to attend Packet Pick-Up to receive your race packet. This packet will include your race t-shirt (if you registered before April 14th), your bib #, timing chip and a few other goodies.  Pre-race Packet Pick-Up hours are 10 AM – 6 PM on Friday, April 27 inside of the new Vigo County YMCA (Fairbanks ParkTerre Haute).  Look for signs on west doors to enter. Pre-race Packet Pick-Up is great as you avoid the worry of long lines on race day. Packets will also be available for pick-up from 12:15 PM – 1:00 PM outside of the Vigo County YMCA on race day. Again, avoid the longer lines and pick up on Friday if possible.

United Way launches 2012 Reading Buddies program PDF Print E-mail

From the Tribune Star - TERRE HAUTE — United Way of the Wabash Valley in Terre Haute is collecting new or gently used stuffed animals from individuals, local businesses, groups and churches. The animals will be given to area first graders as part of a new program called Reading Buddies. 

In May, first-graders at local elementary schools will receive a stuffed animal — a Reading Buddy — to read to during guided reading in the classroom and free time. At the end of the school year, the students will take their Buddies home with them to encourage further reading at home with their families.

Terre Haute – The first annual Steve Weatherford's "Rush the Punter" 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will take place on Saturday, April 28 at the Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute, IN.

"Steve is proving once again that he gives back and cares about his hometown. We are very excited to be partnering with Steve and the Vigo County School Corporation to help raise money for our early childhood education program - Success by 6. A program that helps thousands of children in the Wabash Valley every year," Troy Fears, United Way Executive Director stated.

From the Tribune Star - TERRE HAUTE — Eight women who have made positive differences in the lives of their communities will be honored next month through a new program presented by United Way of the Wabash Valley.

The inaugural Wabash Valley Women of Influence will recognize those eight women (see list below) during a breakfast event April 19 in O'Shaughnessy Hall at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. An audience of 500 is anticipated.
