Ways
to Give to the United Way -
Planned Giving
Given the chance, most of us would love
to leave a legacy. A legacy is evidence that our lives have
made a difference in our community. A legacy is also an attempt
to continue that which we have established during our lifetime.
Included in our legacy is our personal philanthropy.
Of course, a legacy refers to more than just money. It refers
to the values that we wish to leave to our heirs, our loved ones
and our community. But how we distribute our money is perhaps
the best indicator of our values.
Unfortunately, when we die, our charitable giving ends -- unless
we create a legacy. The needs for our support are paralleled
by our desire to continue our generosity. The solution is
establishing a legacy of giving through a planned gift.
In times past only the very wealthy could create such a legacy.
Today, however, with a variety of tax-favored ways of doing estate
planning, many more can experience the joy that comes from leaving
a legacy.
A certain portion of your treasure is “social capital”.
It will be redistributed, through taxes –
during your lifetime and at your death – to others.
Through planned charitable giving, you – not some governmental
unit – direct who benefits from your social capital.
A planned gift can be revocable or irrevocable and designated
to any or many organizations supported through United Way. Any gift
can also be designated to support the United Way of the Wabash Valley
in general.
By creating a planned gift, you can:
- save personal income and estate taxes,
- increase personal retirement income,
- provide more cost effective support for dependents and heirs,
and
- make the largest gifts you have ever made to the United Way.
Gift vehicles that can be used to create your legacy include:
- Appreciated assets,
- Trusts,
- Annuities,
- Pooled Income Fund,
- Bequests through wills,
- Real estate, and
- Life insurance.
